Desk lighting that reduces eye strain
Tired eyes at a desk are usually a contrast problem, not a brightness problem. A bright screen in a dark room, or a window glaring behind the monitor, strains eyes faster than any screen setting.
Quick answer
Fix position first: no bright window directly behind or in front of your screen, and some ambient light so the screen is not the only bright thing in the room. Then add task light where you read paper or write, aimed to avoid screen reflections.
1. Kill the glare before buying anything
Turn off the overhead light and look at your screen. If you see the window or a lamp reflected in it, that reflection is competing with your work all day. Move the screen, angle it, or reposition the light source. Curtains or blinds on the offending window cost less than any product and fix the actual problem.
2. Balance the room
Eyes strain when they constantly adapt between a bright screen and a dark room. A soft ambient light behind or beside the monitor reduces that contrast. It does not need to be bright; it needs to remove the cave feeling.
3. Task light for paper work
If you read documents, write by hand, or do detailed work at the desk, a focused task light aimed at the work surface (not at the screen) helps. Position it to the side opposite your writing hand to avoid casting shadows over your work.
4. What about monitor light bars?
Light bars that sit on top of the monitor wash light over the desk without taking desk space and without shining into the screen. They suit people who want task light but have no room for a lamp base. They do not replace room lighting; they supplement it. Check that the bar fits your monitor's thickness and that its color temperature is adjustable if you work evenings.
5. One verified example
BenQ's ScreenBar is the best-known monitor light bar. From BenQ's official pages (checked September 2026): it mounts on the monitor with a clip, uses an asymmetrical design that lights the desk without reflecting glare off the screen, has adjustable color temperature and auto dimming from a built-in light sensor, and carries a 1-year limited warranty. BenQ does not claim it replaces a general desk lamp or room lighting, so we do not either. We have not tested it ourselves, and we could not verify a current US price on BenQ's official pages.
